How to convert

How the conversion works

Every Kruti Dev character is mapped to its Unicode letter, longest sequences first, so that {k becomes क्ष before k can be read as a matra. Then the order is repaired: the short i-matra, typed before its consonant in Kruti Dev, is moved after the consonant cluster, and the reph, typed after its syllable, is moved in front of it as र्. The result is normalised Unicode (NFC).

Frequently asked questions

My Kruti Dev file shows English letters on another computer. Why?

The file contains Latin characters that only look like Hindi when the Kruti Dev 010 font is installed and selected. On a computer without the font, the real characters show. Converting to Unicode removes the dependency on the font.

Can I paste Unicode output into Google Docs or a website form?

Yes. Unicode Hindi is standard text, so it displays correctly wherever a Unicode Devanagari font is available, which is the case on current computers and phones.

Why did श or ष become a quotation mark?

In Kruti Dev 010 the apostrophe key is श and the double-quote key is ष. Word's smart quotes option can replace them with curly quotes while you type. Tick 'Undo Word smart quotes' under the converter to reverse it.

Does this convert other legacy Hindi fonts?

It reads Kruti Dev 010 / DevLys 010 encoding only. We have not verified the character maps of other legacy fonts or other Kruti Dev versions, so we don't claim they convert correctly.

Is there a limit on text length?

The tool converts up to 200,000 characters at a time. For longer documents, convert them in parts.
