Why a converter is needed at all
Kruti Dev 010 maps Hindi shapes onto the character positions of an ordinary keyboard: each key’s normal character is drawn as a Hindi shape, and Hindi is typed in the order the shapes appear on paper. That order differs from Unicode in two places:
- The short i-matra ि is drawn to the left, so it is typed before the consonant (and before a whole conjunct).
- The reph (the र् hook) is drawn on top at the right, so it is typed after the syllable it belongs to.
The converter reorders both, maps conjuncts like क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र, द्ध, द्य to their single Kruti Dev characters, and keeps nukta letters such as ज़, फ़, ड़. The Kruti Dev keyboard chart lists the key for each letter if you want to type or correct text by hand.
Before you submit converted text
- English words can’t be written in Kruti Dev. The tool copies them unchanged and warns you; put them in an English font.
- Symbols with no Kruti Dev character, such as ₹, % and ॐ, are copied unchanged and listed.

What is the difference between Mangal and Kruti Dev?
Mangal is a Unicode font: each Hindi letter is stored as its own Unicode character. Kruti Dev 010 is a legacy font that stores Hindi as Latin characters and draws them as Hindi. Converting Mangal to Kruti Dev changes the characters themselves, not just the font name.
Why can't I just select my Hindi text and change the font to Kruti Dev?
Because the characters are different. Unicode Hindi text displayed in Kruti Dev 010 does not become Kruti Dev text; the font has no Unicode Hindi letters. The text first has to be converted, which is what this tool does.
Is the Kruti Dev output the same as DevLys 010?
Yes. The two fonts use the same encoding, so this output also works with DevLys 010. We describe the evidence on the home page.
How do I paste the result into Word?
Copy the output, paste it into Word, select it and choose Kruti Dev 010 from the font list. The Latin characters then display as Hindi.
Does it support Kruti Dev 040 or other versions?
The output is Kruti Dev 010 encoding. We have not verified other Kruti Dev versions, so we do not claim the output is correct for them.
